Closing the Performance Gap

As part of No Child Left Behind, the Louisiana Department of Education must provide information on student performance broken out by subgroups, which include ethnicity, poverty (free and reduced lunch) and special education.

The Louisiana Department of Education recently analyzed the performance of these subgroups for Orleans Parish from 2000 to 2010, which includes all Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) schools from 2000-05 and all OPSB and Recovery School District (RSD) schools from 2006-10, and compared Orleans’ performance to the state average.

The graph below shows the percent of black students performing Basic or Above in all grades (grades 3-11) and for all tests (English, Math, Science and Social Studies).

Black students have closed the performance gap between Orleans Parish and the state average by 9 percentage points in just the last three years!
